Learning More About Your Credit

AnnualCreditReport.com is a helpful source for viewing your credit history and learning more about how it is calculated. It is the only authorized source for the free credit report that you are entitled to by law.   Beware of other ads or websites run by companies promising free credit reports. While the sites may provide legitimate services, they often allow only a short trial period for the “free” report. If you don’t cancel in time, your credit card may be charged.

SCAM ALERT

It has come to our attention that people have received text messages originating from a 608 area code stating that their Blackhawk Community Credit Union debit and credit cards have been deactivated. The messages request that members text or call back to reactivate their cards. Members are then prompted to enter their card number in an automated system. Please remember that Blackhawk will never ask you for this kind of information via text, over the phone or online. If you received this text and entered your card information, please contact us immediately at 608.755.6065 and we will stop your card and order you a new one. Partnering with the Janesville School District for Financial Literacy

Blackhawk Community Credit Union was recently awarded a grant from the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation to help offer web-based personal finance lessons to students in grades  K-12 in the Janesville School District. To help accomplish this goal, we purchased 10 iPads that serve as portable teaching devices. Each iPad includes 20 applications that we researched and selected to meet the needs of various grade levels on key financial topics and to appeal to student interests. This summer we have been designing lessons for students to use with the iPads to engage in financial learning and decision-making. Lessons will cover such areas as saving and wealth building, improving creditworthiness and budgeting. We are also training six of our student tellers to be Financial Literacy Student Ambassadors. They will serve as role models and leaders in their schools providing peer-to-peer financial education. With the partnership we established with the Janesville Schools, the District is now

Guest Post: Four Ways to Budget Smarter, Not Harder by John Gower of NerdWallet

4 Ways to Budget Smarter, Not Harder Creating a budget is a life necessity - one that consumers, businesses, and governments alike must address. Unfortunately, more than half of Americans lack a budget to help track and understand their personal spending habits. Why do so many people continue to turn a blind eye to their personal finances? Many would likely claim that a budget is either too tough to follow, or too time-consuming to prepare. However, if you can learn to make smarter decisions, and take simple actions to control spending, then maintaining a solid budget could become second nature. Here are four tips to help make your budgeting process smarter, more efficient, and easier to follow.  1. Understand opportunity cost If you’ve ever taken a class in economics, you may remember this term. Opportunity cost is, to put it simply, the benefits you sacrifice by choosing one action instead of another. When applied to your budget and spending, this concept is an important
